The Future of Libraries in the Shadow of Artificial Intelligence

Aziz ur Rehman

Life occasionally bestows us with such delightful and surprising moments that we neither plan for nor expect in advance. One such unexpected yet pleasant moment occurred on April 18 when I, along with my long-time and sincere friend, Muhammad Walaique Khan visited the Department of Mass Communication. The purpose of our brief yet impactful visit was to extend heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Bakht Rawan on his appointment as the department’s chairman. As always, Dr. Rawan’s kindness, friendliness, and pleasant demeanor made the meeting meaningful and memorable.
During our conversation, he smiled and said, “There’s an important convention tomorrow, and I’ve entrusted you with the responsibility of media coverage!” This statement was a delightful blend of joy, surprise, and pride for me. Had we not come just to offer our congratulations, I might have missed out on this valuable opportunity. During the meeting, Dr. Bakht Rawan also shared his vision and ambitions. His words made it clear that he is deeply committed and determined to modernize the Department of Mass Communication. Practical training in digital media for youth, short-term courses, and curriculum reform in line with evolving media trends are part of his agenda.
I had the honor of working closely with Dr. Rawan as Assistant PRO for almost three and a half years. During this time, I witnessed his professional insight, discipline, leadership, and determination up close. Based on this experience, I can confidently say that under his leadership, the Department of Mass Communication will reach new heights and pave the way for future progress.
To fulfill the responsibility assigned to me, I arrived early the next morning—Saturday, April 19 near the university’s Academic Complex. I saw that aside from Umair Bin Nadeem, Assistant Director of the Directorate of Public Relations, no one else had arrived yet. We were the first ones to enter the auditorium. Slowly, others began to arrive. Among those who came after us were Student Counselor Faisal Altaf from the Directorate of Student Affairs and Director Syed Ghulam Kazim Ali. Soon, the hall began to fill with attendees.
At exactly 9:30 AM, the 6th National Convention on the topic “The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Libraries” officially commenced. This academic gathering not only served as a strong bridge between technology and education but also introduced new dimensions to the concept of future libraries.
The chief guest of the convention, Vice Chancellor of Emerson University Multan, Professor Dr. Muhammad Ramzan, spoke about the revolutionary impact of artificial intelligence in education. He emphasized that the effective use of modern technology not only enhances the education system but also transforms research methods, information access, and learning styles.
Internationally renowned experts such as Adnan Adil (London South Bank University), Dr. Asim Qayyum (Charles Sturt University, Australia), and Professor Dr. Parvez Ahmed (Chairman, Department of Library Science, AIOU) shared their thoughts, experiences, and global trends with the audience. They stressed that for effective integration of AI, modern training for library staff, enhancement of digital infrastructure, and a structured monitoring system have become essential needs of the time.
A key feature of the convention was a panel discussion titled: “AI in Libraries: Shaping the Future of Research and Access to Knowledge.” In this session, experts deeply analyzed how AI is revolutionizing the world of research and transforming libraries into modern, user-friendly hubs for rapid dissemination of knowledge.
The excellent management of this splendid event was truly commendable. Student Counselor Faisal Altaf remained active and attentive throughout. He oversaw hall decoration, technical arrangements, and seating order while also ensuring guest guidance, meeting their needs, and giving a warm send-off—all with impressive efficiency.
Behind the seamless execution of every aspect of the event was the contribution of a talented individual: Syed Ghulam Kazim Ali, Director of the Directorate of Students Advisory and Counseling Services at Allama Iqbal Open University. It is rightly said that when a task is entrusted to him, he not only completes it but perfects it. His guidance played a pivotal role in making the convention not only successful but also memorable.
In conclusion, I would proudly and appreciatively note that under the visionary and dynamic leadership of Dr. Nasir Mahmood, the university is organizing intellectual and academic events aimed at nurturing students’ minds, raising awareness, and promoting social consciousness. These events are not only praiseworthy but also serve as guiding lights for students. The convention in question was a shining link in this very chain—one that provided young minds the opportunity to think, understand, and form insightful opinions about the role of artificial intelligence in libraries. This session not only highlighted new perspectives in knowledge and research but also mentally prepared students for the future digital academic environment.
