ISLAMABAD / BEIJING, Oct. 17 (Independent Report
In a significant boost to Pakistan’s maritime and economic development, China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) has completed the installation of a state-of-the-art Weather and Tidal Monitoring Station at Gwadar Port, while Hong Kong and Punjab have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen trade and investment cooperation.

According to a report by Gwadar Pro, the newly established Gwadar Port Weather and Tidal Monitoring Station will record real-time environmental parameters of the Gwadar coastal region, supporting port operations, maritime safety, and long-term oceanographic studies.

A Gwadar Port official said that accurate monitoring of weather and tidal changes is essential for docking operations, risk management, and infrastructure safety. “Comprehensive data enables port authorities to prepare for adverse conditions, reorganize cargo schedules, and ensure faster recovery during extreme weather events,” he noted.

The monitoring station is equipped with four specialized oceanographic instruments — including an anemometer for wind speed and direction, a CTD Sensor for water conductivity, temperature, and depth, a water quality monitoring system, and a submerged tide gauge for real-time sea-level data.

Officials stated that the system will enhance Gwadar Port’s resilience against climate variability, while improving maritime safety and operational efficiency.

Meanwhile, in Beijing, the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce (HKGCC) and the Industries, Commerce & Investment Department (ICID) Punjab signed an MoU to promote bilateral trade, economic collaboration, and investment facilitation.

The agreement was signed by Agnes Chan, Chairperson of HKGCC, and Chaudhry Shafay Hussain, Punjab’s Minister for Industries, Commerce & Investment, at the HKGCC headquarters.

Under the pact, both parties will exchange market intelligence, organize trade promotion events, and facilitate business partnerships between Hong Kong enterprises and Punjab-based industries.

Chaudhry Shafay Hussain highlighted Punjab’s investor-friendly environment, including tax holidays, industrial land leases, and affordable skilled labour, which have attracted a growing number of international companies.

“This collaboration with HKGCC will enhance our export capacity, attract foreign investment, and foster people-to-people ties,” he stated.

Agnes Chan said the partnership would “create new opportunities and strengthen Hong Kong’s role as a super-connector between Asian markets.”

Both initiatives—the Gwadar Port monitoring project and the Hong Kong-Punjab MoU—reflect Pakistan’s strategic efforts to deepen China-Pakistan and regional economic cooperation, advancing the goals of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and expanding international trade networks.
