All Parties Hurriyat Conference Expresses Deep Concern Over Prolonged Detention of Kashmiri Leaders in Indian Jails — Calls on UN, EU, and OIC for Immediate Release

The All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) — Azad Jammu & Kashmir and Pakistan chapter has expressed deep concern and sorrow over the inhumane treatment and decades-long imprisonment of Kashmiri resistance leaders and activists in Indian jails, terming it a gross violation of international human rights and humanitarian laws.

In a statement issued from Islamabad, APHC Convener Ghulam Muhammad Safi said that “the only ‘crime’ of these leaders is that they have demanded the internationally recognized and UN-guaranteed right to self-determination for the people of Jammu and Kashmir.”

He recalled that 77 years ago, India itself took the Kashmir dispute to the United Nations, pledging to allow the people of Jammu and Kashmir to decide their own political future through a free and fair plebiscite. Safi reminded that India’s first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, had clearly stated in Srinagar that “our military presence in Kashmir is only to restore peace; once peace is achieved, Indian forces will withdraw, and the people of Kashmir will be free to determine their own destiny through a plebiscite.”

Safi lamented that India has not only reneged on its international commitment but has also imprisoned those Kashmiri leaders who remind the world of this broken promise. Many of them, he noted, are suffering from serious health conditions and are denied access to medical care, a clear violation of the UN Human Rights Charter and the Nelson Mandela Rules for the treatment of prisoners.

The APHC urged the United Nations, European Union, Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), and all major international human rights organizations to exert pressure on India to:

1. Immediately release all detained Hurriyat leaders and activists.

2. End the ongoing political repression and human rights violations in Jammu and Kashmir.

3. Implement UN resolutions granting Kashmiris their right to self-determination.

“Demanding one’s legitimate right is not a crime; it is a right enshrined in the UN Charter and international law,” Safi emphasized.

He further warned that the continued silence of the UN and major world powers not only emboldens India’s oppressive actions but also poses a serious threat to peace and stability in South Asia and beyond. “The Kashmir issue is not just a territorial dispute,” he said, “it is a question of justice, dignity, and the universal right to self-determination. How long will the world remain silent?”

In conclusion, the All Parties Hurriyat Conference called on the international community to take immediate and practical steps for the release of Kashmiri political prisoners and to ensure that the Kashmir issue is resolved in accordance with UN resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.
