Revival of Student Unions: A Need of the Hour, Says Awami National Party
Peshawar, December 18, 2024: Provincial President of Awami National Party, Mian Iftikhar Hussain, emphasized the need to revive student unions in educational institutions, calling it a constitutional right of students. He termed the ban on student unions as a leftover of authoritarian rule that continues to this day.¹
Mian Iftikhar Hussain stressed that the ban has hindered the emergence of new leadership in practical politics from educational institutions. He argued that the revival of student unions is the responsibility of provincial governments after the 18th Constitutional Amendment.
The Awami National Party leader criticized the restriction on democratic politics and struggles, calling it an old practice in Pakistan. He lamented that those responsible for Pakistan’s downfall are often portrayed as heroes, while the personalities of those who made sacrifices for the country are distorted in history.
Mian Iftikhar Hussain expressed concern that the new generation is being taught false history in educational institutions, highlighting the significant role of military dictator Zia-ul-Haq in Pakistan’s destruction.
