SPECIAL REPORT UTHAL.JULy 27
The Green Pakistan Project, launched with great fanfare to bring environmental restoration and greenery to the arid landscapes of Balochistan, has turned into a symbol of neglect and failed governance in Uthal. Despite millions of rupees invested in massive plantation efforts to transform 800 acres of barren land, the project has withered away due to administrative apathy and lack of accountability.
Located near the Kharari area of Uthal, the project’s failure is evident in the dried-up land, wilted saplings, and once-promising green areas now turned into grazing fields for livestock. This outcome is a stark contrast to the project’s aim of revitalizing the drought-stricken landscape of Balochistan and providing a beacon of hope for the region.- Launched in 2023 with a vision to develop six canals to irrigate millions of acres of barren land
– Aimed at modernizing agricultural practices, improving productivity, and promoting sustainable farming methods
– Part of a larger plan to boost food security and economic growth in Pakistan
Critics argue that the project lacks stakeholder consent and may exacerbate water shortages in southern parts of the country
– Concerns raised over unequal water distribution, particularly affecting Sindh’s water security
– Environmental risks and potential impact on the Indus Delta’s ecosystem- If successful, the project could transform the lives of families and provide new economic opportunities in the region
– Potential to serve as a model for other regions in Pakistan facing similar challenges of poverty, unemployment, and underdevelopment .
