IG ORDERS MONTHLY MEETINGS WITH MINORITY LEADERS
Karachi August 8: Special Assistant to the Sindh Chief Minister on Minority Affairs and president of the Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) Minority Wing Sindh, Dr Lalchand Ukrani, met Inspector General of Sindh Police Dr Ghulam Nabi Memon to review the province’s law and order situation and discuss measures for the protection of minority communities. The meeting, held at the Central Police Office, was attended by PPP Minority Wing Karachi division president Mushtaq Matto, Sukkur division president Mukhi Ishwar Lal Makhija, Shaheed Benazirabad division president Chando Mal Sochi, Mirpurkhas division president Ramesh Kumar Malhi, Hyderabad division president Dileep Kumar Ramchandani, Larkana division information secretary Advocate Molchand Makwana, and former chairperson of the Pooj Hindu Panchayat Larkana, Kalpana Devi.
During the discussions, Dr Ukrani drew the IG’s attention to a recent increase in crimes targeting members of minority groups, particularly incidents of forced conversions, and attacks on properties and places of worship. He stressed that the protection of life, property, and religious freedom of minorities was a constitutional obligation and a key priority of the Sindh government. The delegation also raised the case of Priya Kumari, a missing girl from the minority community, and urged the police chief to intensify recovery efforts. Responding to the concerns, Dr Ghulam Nabi Memon said the Sindh Police were committed to safeguarding the rights and security of all citizens without discrimination. He issued directives to all DIGs to hold monthly coordination meetings with PPP Minority Wing divisional presidents in their respective jurisdictions to address community grievances promptly.
He further ordered enhanced security measures for minority places of worship, residences, and religious gatherings, and instructed senior officers to personally monitor sensitive events. “Any negligence or dereliction of duty in ensuring the safety of minorities will not be tolerated,” he warned. The meeting concluded on an understanding to strengthen liaison between the Sindh Police and minority representatives to promote harmony, improve trust, and ensure rapid response to any incident affecting the community.
