BISP Chairperson Condemns Baseless Criticism Amid Devastating Floods, Reaffirms Support for Millions of Poor Families
Islamabad, 23 September 2025: The Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) has come under the spotlight amid recent nationwide floods. Chairperson Senator Rubina Khalid urged political leaders to refrain from baseless criticism and focus on providing timely relief to affected communities.
Speaking at a press conference, Senator Khalid stated that calling BISP a “fraud” is an insult to over 10 million families benefiting from the programme. She emphasized that BISP has no political affiliation and operates solely to support the poor and vulnerable.
Highlighting BISP’s critical role in disaster management, she recalled the 2022 floods, when BISP provided Rs. 70 billion in emergency assistance, delivering cash grants of Rs. 25,000 to 2.8 million affected families. She also cited BISP’s effective use of its database during the COVID-19 pandemic to support vulnerable households.
Senator Khalid reaffirmed Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s directive that flood relief should be channeled exclusively through BISP, describing it as the most credible, efficient, and reliable mechanism for disaster assistance. She noted that Prime Minister’s formal directives are awaited to implement this fully.
Under its ongoing initiatives, BISP supports over 10 million families nationwide and is monitored by international organizations to ensure transparency and accountability. The Benazir Taleemi Wazaif, supporting children’s education, has enabled more than 400 students to achieve A+ results, with several securing top positions. The Benazir Nashonuma Programme is improving child health and reducing stunting, while the Benazir Hunarmand Programme equips youth with vocational skills for economic independence.
Senator Khalid also highlighted that BISP’s payment system is being fully digitized, under the guidance of the President and Prime Minister, to enhance transparency and ease of access for beneficiaries.
