A tragic avalanche incident near Burzil Top in Gilgit-Baltistan’s Astore district has claimed the lives of three individuals, including an officer of the Pakistan Army, a soldier, and a civilian snow cutter operator, during a road clearance operation in the border region.
According to official sources, road rehabilitation work was underway to restore the strategic route connecting Burzil Top with the Minimarg Headquarters. Late at night, near the Gultari turn, a massive avalanche suddenly struck the work site, burying personnel engaged in snow removal operations under heavy snow.
Those who embraced martyrdom include a Pakistan Army officer, a soldier, and Muhammad Isa Khan, a snow cutter operator employed by the Works Department. Despite immediate efforts by rescue teams, all three were found buried under the avalanche and could not survive due to the severity of the incident and harsh weather conditions.
Following the incident, rescue and search operations were carried out under extremely challenging conditions, including sub-zero temperatures and limited visibility. The bodies were later recovered and shifted after completion of necessary procedures.
The tragic loss has cast a pall of grief over the region. Local residents, civil administration, and military officials have expressed deep sorrow and condolences to the bereaved families. The martyrs were remembered for their dedication and sacrifice while performing duties in one of the country’s most difficult and hazardous terrains.
Authorities have reiterated the importance of strict safety measures during winter operations in avalanche-prone areas, particularly along strategic routes vital for connectivity and security.
