After 5.6 Tremors Shake Districts, PDMA Enforces Earthquake Guidelines 2026 with Province on Red Alert
Independent Report
Quetta, Feb26: The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Balochistan has held a high-level consultative session aimed at executing the “Earthquake Guidelines 2026” developed by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), with a focus on bolstering preparedness and response mechanisms throughout the province.
Senior representatives from all concerned administrative departments and institutions attended the meeting, during which their responsibilities were outlined in detail. Particular emphasis was placed on districts vulnerable to seismic activity, especially those that have recently felt notable tremors.
Official figures indicate that since the start of 2026, earthquakes registering up to 5.6 on the Richter scale have struck Khuzdar, Jhal Magsi, and Jaffarabad, triggering anxiety among residents. Specialists at the seismic monitoring center cautioned that strong aftershocks or additional powerful tremors could follow recent activity. Consequently, district administrations and emergency response agencies across the affected areas have been instructed to maintain a heightened state of readiness.
In line with the newly introduced guidelines, authorities have prepared an extensive safety strategy that mandates strict compliance with building regulations. The framework requires that all upcoming construction projects incorporate earthquake-resistant technologies. Relevant departments have also been directed to intensify oversight of structural soundness and adherence to safety standards.
To reduce the risk of casualties in the event of a major quake, a rapid response system has been established. The strategy includes assembling trained emergency units and strategically deploying heavy machinery in high-risk zones. Officials highlighted the need for clearly designated evacuation routes in densely populated areas and public locations to ensure orderly movement during emergencies.
Additionally, the administration plans to initiate a province-wide awareness drive to inform citizens about essential earthquake safety practices, including identifying secure shelters and learning basic first aid techniques.
Experts observed that Balochistan’s position along active fault lines makes strict observance of precautionary measures indispensable for protecting lives and property.
