Lahore, March 6, 2026: Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has approved a plan to clear flood-prone zones across Punjab within three months to strengthen post-flood management and disaster preparedness.
The decision was made during a special meeting chaired by the chief minister, where departments presented detailed briefings. Authorities were instructed to strictly enforce a ban on construction within river passages and waterways, with no financial assistance to be provided for damages to illegal structures built in water channels.
The meeting also approved restructuring the Provincial Disaster Management Authority with eight new wings to enhance disaster response, alongside the construction of 17 mini dams and increased water storage at Kalabagh Barrage and Sadhnai Barrage. Plans were also set to introduce inflatable dam technology, establish District Emergency Operation Centers, regional disaster centers, warehouses, and provide modern equipment to Rescue 1122 for flood operations.
Officials reported that 186 roads (563 km), 446 culverts, and one bridge damaged during floods have been restored. Across Punjab’s five major rivers, 1,990 areas are high-risk, 1,278 medium-risk, and 3,169 low-risk flood zones. Current projects include 183 ongoing irrigation initiatives, desilting of 298 drains and flood channels, and improvements to 67 drainage systems.
The chief minister also reviewed short-, medium- and long-term flood management plans, emphasizing timely implementation to safeguard communities and infrastructure.
