JACOBABAD: Despite repeated claims by the district administration and the Food Department of action against wheat hoarding, flour prices continue to rise in Jacobabad, triggering public criticism over the lack of market relief and raising fresh questions about enforcement and governance.

According to local market sources, the price of a 38-kilogram flour bag has increased by Rs50 to Rs100, with wholesale rates ranging between Rs4,550 and Rs4,600, while flour is being sold in the retail market at around Rs130 per kilogram. Retailers say they cannot reduce prices unless wholesale dealers lower their rates.

Several flour dealers reportedly dismissed the impact of the official crackdown, claiming that market prices would continue to be determined by traders. Their statements have intensified concerns over the effectiveness of regulatory oversight and the implementation of government directives.

Local sources also alleged that flour is being smuggled through border routes, with claims that illegal consignments are allowed to pass after the payment of bribes.

Residents and civil society representatives have urged the Sindh Government, Deputy Commissioner Jacobabad, Food Department and law enforcement authorities to investigate the reported price manipulation, alleged smuggling and corruption, and take strict action against anyone found responsible.
