Awami Tehreek Central Committee Vows to Resist Corporate Farming and Canal Projects
Hyderabad, April 4: The Central Standing Committee of the Awami Tehreek held a pivotal meeting at D-10 Palijo House in Qasimabad, Hyderabad, chaired by its Central President Advocate Vasand Thari The session reviewed ongoing protests against six new canals, corporate farming, and controversial amendments to the IRSA Act, while announcing plans to observe World Hari Day across Sindh on April 17.
The committee condemned corporate farming as a “scheme of economic genocide against peasants” and vowed to intensify resistance. “The people of Sindh will never tolerate these canals or corporate farming under any circumstances,” declared Advocate Vasand Thari. Protests are scheduled in Sujawal (April 12), Mithi (April 13), and Jati (April 19).
Vasand Thari accused Punjab’s rulers of violating national and international laws, alleging that 172 years of water theft and ecological plunder had turned Sindh into a “barren wasteland.” He criticized the PPP for “selling out Sindh’s land, water, and resources” by backing corporate farming and the controversial SIFC framework. “The PPP represents a handful of oppressive feudal lords, not Sindh’s 70 million people,” he stated.
The Awami Tehreek demanded:
Immediate abolition of the “One-Unit-like” SIFC system and restoration of provincial rights.
Termination of corporate farming projects and redistribution of land to local landless farmers.
Cancellation of the six new canals designed to divert Sindh’s water to corporate entities.
Vasand Thari urged Sindhis to unite, stating, “Our peaceful struggle will defeat conspiracies against Sindh’s prosperity.” He emphasized that Sindh’s farmers, women, youth, and workers are leading the charge to protect the Indus River and their livelihoods.
Prominent attendees included Senior Vice President Noor Ahmed Katiar, General Secretary Advocate Sajid Hussain Mahesar, and leaders from allied groups like the Sindhi Shagird Tehreek and Sindhyani Tehreek.
