PPP Stages Protests Across Sanghar Against Controversial Canals on Indus River
Sanghar (Hasnain Ashiq Saand) The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Sanghar district staged widespread protests across all tehsils against the construction of controversial canals on the Indus River.
According to reports, a torch-bearing protest rally was led by PPP leader Aurangzeb Mari in Sanghar, marching from Municipal Chowk to the Press Club. In Sinjhoro, MNA Alauddin Junejo led a similar rally, while in Shahdadpur, Provincial Minister Shahid Khan Thaheem led a demonstration from Thheem House to the Shahdadpur Press Club. In Tando Adam, PPP City President Taj Muhammad Waryah led a rally from Paras House to the Press Club. Additionally, in Jam Nawaz Ali, MPA Jam Shabbir Ali Khan led a torch-bearing rally from Jam House.
Hundreds of PPP workers participated in these rallies, chanting slogans such as “No to illegal canals” and “No encroachment on Indus River.”
Addressing the gatherings, PPP leaders declared that they would never accept the construction of disputed canals. They accused the federal government of launching anti-Sindh projects that the people of Sindh have outright rejected.
They highlighted Sindh’s severe water shortage and warned that with this year predicted to be a drought year, further disruption to the Indus River’s natural flow would lead to a major crisis. They cautioned that if there is no significant rainfall, Sindh could face famine-like conditions, making survival even more difficult.
The protesters demanded an immediate halt to the controversial canal project.
Prominent figures participating in the protests included Rajesh Kumar Hardasani, Abdul Kareem Mari, Syed Khair Shah, Waqar Dero, Sanwal Dero, Syed Yousuf Shah, Irfan Ali Shoro, Maqbool Nizamani, Akhtar Nizamani, Ansh Laghari, Muhammad Achar Saand, Waseem Gul Shaikh, Ameen Waryah, and others.
