BFA resumes crackdown against health-hazardous vegetables grown using sewage water after Eid-holidays
QUETTA: The Balochistan Food Authority (BFA) has resumed its crackdown against substandard and health-hazardous vegetables grown using sewage water, immediately after the Eid-ul-Adha holidays.
As part of this campaign, a large quantity of cultivated and ready-to-harvest crops were destroyed in Killi Ramzan, an area adjacent to Samungli Road. According to the BFA spokesperson, the land was being irrigated with toxic sewage water, and vegetables grown there were being prepared for sale in local markets.
Director General BFA, Waqar Khursheed Alam, stated that the BFA would continue to fulfill its responsibilities with full dedication, efficiency, and transparency to protect public health. “Such vegetables are extremely dangerous to human health and can cause various diseases. Their cultivation would not be tolerated under any circumstances,” he said.
The DG further stated that no one would be allowed to grow vegetables using polluted water from drains.
He appealed to the public to fulfill their responsibility toward healthy food and to assist the authority by reporting such practices.
It is worth mentioning that this campaign by the BFA is being carried out under special instructions from the BFA Chairman and the Provincial Minister for Food. The aim is to protect the public from harmful and substandard vegetables and to ensure food safety standards are upheld.
So far, over 300 acres of land in various areas of Quetta city have been cleared of such unhealthy crops, and the campaign would continue in the coming days.
