Punjab Seeks Chinese Satellite Technology to Modernize Agriculture and Boost Productivity

A high-level Punjab government delegation met with Chinese satellite technology firm PIESAT in Beijing to explore space-based solutions aimed at transforming Pakistan’s agriculture sector, Gwadar Pro reported on Wednesday.

The delegation, led by Punjab Minister for Agriculture and Livestock Syed Ashiq Hussain Kirmani, held detailed discussions on potential cooperation in satellite-powered crop monitoring, disaster management, and digital watershed management.

The initiative comes as Punjab — Pakistan’s agricultural heartland — intensifies efforts to modernize farming practices, enhance crop yields, and adopt data-driven agricultural management systems.

In a related effort, the provincial government has launched a Rs. 30 billion high-tech mechanization programme to increase farm efficiency and promote modern cultivation methods.

The meeting builds on a series of recent collaborations between PIESAT and Pakistan. Earlier this year, the company launched a smart agriculture pilot project in Pakistan and signed a strategic cooperation agreement in June to advance smart farming initiatives.

In September, PIESAT signed a 2.9 billion yuan ($400 million) deal with Pakistan to support the development of an independent satellite network, marking a major step toward agricultural innovation and technological self-reliance.

Officials emphasized that the integration of satellite data and precision farming would help optimize water usage, predict crop health, and minimize losses from climate change — ushering in a new era of smart agriculture in Punjab.
