ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s public health governance received a major uplift as Prof. Dr. Shahzad Ali Khan, Vice Chancellor of the Health Services Academy (HSA), was elected Chairman of the Global Fund Pakistan Oversight Committee during a high-level meeting held at the Country Coordinating Mechanism (CCM) Secretariat at the National Institute of Health (NIH).

Dr. Shahzad Ali Khan secured a decisive landslide victory, reflecting the strong confidence of CCM members in his professional competence, integrity, and leadership. He will serve a two-year term in this pivotal role.

The Oversight Committee is responsible for monitoring billions of rupees in Global Fund grants allocated for combating HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis (TB), and Malaria across Pakistan. Its mandate includes strict supervision of program performance, financial transparency, procurement scrutiny, and timely identification of bottlenecks or regulatory lapses to ensure optimal utilization of international resources.

Public health experts have termed Dr. Khan’s election a promising development, anticipating stronger accountability mechanisms and improved efficiency in Global Fund–supported initiatives. Analysts believe his leadership will help reinvigorate national disease control efforts and ensure that donor investments translate into measurable benefits for patients nationwide.

Dr. Khan’s appointment is widely seen as a significant step toward strengthening Pakistan’s fight against critical infectious diseases and reinforcing transparency in the health sector.
