Jacobabad: Rising extortion, street crime and targeted harassment of traders have pushed Jacobabad city toward a Katcha-like criminal environment, with citizens blaming sustained government negligence and alleged police corruption for the collapse of law and order.
For a third consecutive day, markets in Garhi Khairo remained shut on a call by the Citizens’ Alliance, as traders—particularly from the Hindu minority community—protested growing insecurity and unchecked extortion. Demonstrators said criminals operate openly while police inaction and alleged collusion have emboldened offenders, eroding public trust.
An emergency law-and-order meeting chaired by the Deputy Commissioner and attended by elected representatives and police officials acknowledged the worsening situation. Participants flagged extortion, street crime and weak policing, stressing urgent corrective measures and protection for minorities.
Following the meeting, a government delegation visited the protest site and assured decisive action against extortionists. Police promised operations within a week, after which protesters called off the sit-in.
Residents warn that assurances must translate into arrests and sustained policing. “Without accountability and an end to corruption, Jacobabad risks becoming indistinguishable from the lawless Katcha belt,” they said.
