The Department of Media Studies at the University of Balochistan, in collaboration with Oslo University and Forman Christian College University, organized a workshop on Peace Journalism aimed at empowering young journalists to report conflict with a humanist perspective.
Professor Dr. Babrak Niaz inaugurated the session, emphasizing the role of youth in promoting peace through content creation and the importance of combining theory with practical training. He highlighted that misinformation and disinformation have exacerbated conflicts in Pakistan, making the media’s role in peacebuilding critical.
MPhil scholar Amina Bibi stressed that citizen journalism and social media can amplify the voices of marginalized communities, including women, children, religious minorities, and climate-affected populations, often overlooked in mainstream narratives. Students discussed ethical reporting, fact-checking misinformation, and promoting solution-oriented stories.
Workshop participants, including Anjila and Moiz Ali, highlighted covering human rights issues, development stories, and community challenges in Balochistan to provide hope and counter trauma. The session marked the first phase of an ongoing initiative to develop skilled, ethically-conscious journalists committed to conflict-sensitive reporting.
