Islamabad: On 2 December, President Asif Ali Zardari commemorated the day in 1988 when Shaheed Benazir Bhutto took the oath as Pakistan’s Prime Minister at age 35, becoming the first elected female head of government in the Islamic world.
President Zardari highlighted that after 11 years of martial law, democracy was restored in Pakistan and Bhutto’s leadership marked the beginning of the country’s democratic journey. He noted that her premiership inspired hope across the nation and encouraged political participation among women and youth. The president paid tribute to Bhutto’s dedication to public service, democracy, and equality.
