Independent Report
Islamabad, 20 November 2025:
Acting President Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani has said that empowering women is central to achieving sustainable development, noting that women hold a pivotal place in society and are the true leaders of every family. He expressed these views while addressing a wheelchair distribution ceremony in Multan.
Highlighting the government’s commitment to social welfare, Mr. Gilani pointed out that the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) continues to benefit a large number of low-income families and has become a vital lifeline for those with limited livelihood opportunities.
The Acting President noted that the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) completed several major development initiatives in South Punjab, including the Kot Mithan Bridge, the Head Muhammad Wala Bridge, and a Cadet College, reflecting the party’s longstanding commitment to the region’s uplift.
Mr. Gilani also appreciated the welfare efforts of the Church of Jesus Christ, which, in collaboration with the Society for Special Persons, distributed 150 wheelchairs among persons with disabilities affected by floods.
He reiterated that BISP was launched with the objective of empowering women rather than creating dependency. The programme, he said, gained international recognition for its transparent structure and impact, with many countries requesting briefings on its operational model during his foreign visits.
Emphasizing the dignity-centered approach of BISP, Mr. Gilani noted that the programme ensures at least one member of each beneficiary family receives technical training or employment support, transforming them into active contributors rather than long-term dependents.
He further remarked that supporting the underprivileged is a collective responsibility, adding that the event represents the true spirit of humanitarian service.
