Gwadar, Jan. 4:
The Gwadar Port Authority (GPA) has issued a public tender for the procurement of essential chemicals to ensure uninterrupted operations of the 1.2-million-gallon-per-day (MGD) desalination plant, a critical component of the port city’s drinking water system.
According to the tender notice, bids will be accepted until 11:00 a.m. on January 5 and opened at 11:30 a.m. the same day. The move aims to maintain consistent production at the facility, developed under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
The desalination plant, restored to full capacity in 2025, played a key role in stabilising Gwadar’s water supply during last year’s prolonged dry spell. The Gwadar Development Authority has designated it a permanent element of the city’s daily water network.
Official figures show steady output in recent days, underscoring its operational stability. Completed in December 2023 at a cost of $12.7 million with Chinese support, the plant has significantly reduced reliance on dam reserves and water tankers, strengthening Gwadar’s resilience against recurring water shortages.
