Independent Report
Lahore, January 24:
The Punjab government has launched practical measures to prevent short circuits and fatal accidents caused by hanging electricity wires, with Lahore selected for the first phase of underground cabling.
The decision was taken in a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. A pilot project will be implemented in inner Lahore to remove dangerous overhead wires ahead of the Basant festival. Authorities also reviewed a proposal to divide the city into three zones for phased underground electrification.
It was decided that all new housing schemes will be required to install underground power supply infrastructure. The chief minister directed that alternative arrangements for internet and other services must be ensured during execution.
LESCO officials briefed that Lahore has nearly 40,000 kilometers of electricity lines and 50,000 kilometers of internet cables. Maryam Nawaz said public safety remains the government’s foremost responsibility.
