TEHRAN: Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has claimed that two oil tankers caught fire after striking naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz.
According to an IRGC statement, the incident occurred about an hour earlier when two oil tankers were allegedly directed through a mined area south of the Strait of Hormuz by US intelligence agencies. The statement claimed the vessels hit naval mines, triggering powerful explosions and extensive fires on board.
The IRGC did not identify the tankers involved or provide further details regarding their ownership, cargo, or crew.
In response, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) rejected the allegation in a brief statement posted on the social media platform X, saying the claim was false and adding that, “Like many previous IRGC claims, this one is also false.”
The reported incident has not been independently verified, and no confirmation has been issued by neutral maritime authorities or other independent sources. The conflicting statements from Iran and the United States could not be immediately corroborated.
